What's Inside
Module 1
High Impact Teaching Strategies
It all starts with teaching strategies that give you bang for your buck. Every teacher knows that time in the classroom is limited. There is barely time to fit everything in, let alone waste time teaching in a way that only gives your students minimal growth. In this first module we will explore the general teaching strategies that will help you get super results for your students across the curriculum. These evidence-based techniques have the power to transform your teaching and set you and your students on the path to maximum achievement.
Firstly, we’ll set you up for success by helping you establish strong instructional routines that will give you and your students the confidence to focus on learning and growth.
Secondly, I’ll walk you through differentiation and what this can look like in your classroom. My differentiation planning tool will help you develop confidence in meeting the needs of every child.
Third, you will make key choices about establishing learning behaviours and plan to make this happen in your classroom. You will map out how and when you will teach introduce key language and expectations to get your students on track and keep them there.
Finally, we will explore the power of visuals and their role in communicating your expectations and instructions to your students. You will prepare and introduce visuals into your classroom and use them to give your students certainty about their day.
Highlights:
- Get clear about the direction for your class. It is awesome to feel confident about what you will do to help your students achieve success. It is even better to know that you have a clear plan to support every child in your class.
- Build the foundation for strong learning by establishing instructional routines and student engagement norms.
- Tap into the underestimated power of visuals to save your voice and communicate without barriers.
Module 2
The Literacy Block
In this module you will find the answer to the number one question I receive. “What does a science of reading literacy block look like?” It is one thing to know about the theory of systematic reading instruction, it is entirely another thing to know how to put it into practice.
Right out of the gate I will show you behind the wizard’s curtain so that you can see exactly what goes into a strong, evidence-based literacy block. At the end of this lesson you will have a simple to use tool that will make planning your literacy block simple.
In lesson 2, we explore the growth checkpoints you are aiming for your students to achieve across the year. This will help you to adjust the components of your literacy session each day so that it evolves as your students do.
Lesson 3 outlines the all-important routines that make group work possible. It is inevitable that you will have a range of ‘levels’ in your class and knowing how to get your students on track so that you can provide specialised and specific teaching to each level will make the difference between small group lessons that make a real difference and a bunch of busy work activities that do not get your students closer to the end goal.
Finally, you will learn how to structure and conduct daily shared writing. I will give you a lesson structure and demonstrate exactly how to use this in your classroom.
Highlights
-Getting really clear about what to include in your literacy block
- Supporting students to learn the skills they need to manage themselves so that you can withdraw small groups without frustration.
- Having the simple and practice lesson structure so that daily shared writing is interactive and impactful for all students.
Module 3
Oral Language and Vocabulary
With so many children entering school needing help with oral language, module three is essential. After all, if you can’t say it, you can’t read it or write it! In module three we will explore the conditions for creating a language rich classroom.
Lesson 1 will introduce you to four strategies you can implement immediately to get your students talking. This lesson contains practical, easily implemented techniques that you can use with your students across the curriculum each and every day.
Lessons 2, 3 and 4 invite you to find and use beautiful texts to provide a model and stimulus for the oral language work in your classroom. I know that you don’t have time to spend hours reinventing the wheel, so I am going to share my easy to use planning templates so that you can create a hugely impactful teaching plan in a short space of time.
This module will show you how to help your students to build strong oral language skills that will set them up for writing when they are able. Most of us were never taught about grammar and different types of sentences so I am going to unpack this for you in a simple, easy to understand way. I will then give you two teaching strategies to use in your classroom in either small group or whole class lessons.
Highlights
- Learning simple ways to build an oral language rich classroom
- Having access to my quick and easy planner to use picture books as the stimulus for oral language lessons
- Implementing simple and effective strategies to get your students talking in preparation for writing when they have the transcription skills.
Module 4
Phonological and Phonemic Awareness
Phonological and phonemic awareness (PA) is the first of the big 5 components of evidence-based reading instruction. It is also one of the biggest predictors of reading success and failure. The development of PA skills are critical in supporting children to develop strong reading and spelling skills. Without the ability to blend and segment, children cannot sound out words either to read them or write them down.
We will start this module with an exploration of the early phonological skills, sentence segmentation, syllable work, rhyming and phoneme (sound) isolation. I am going to give you my PA PowerPoints that you can use in your classroom immediately. Daily work in these skills builds the foundations that will make an enormous difference to your students’ development in reading and spelling.
Next, we will dive right into oral blending. What it is, what it isn’t and how we teach it. In this lesson I will demonstrate how to get the most out of your blending lessons and provide a downloadable lesson plan for you to use in your classroom.
Then comes segmenting. The ability to listen for sounds and count them is the necessary foundation for spelling. I am going to show you exactly what a lesson looks like both at a whole class and small group level and give you downloadable resources to teach this key skill.
Finally, we will cover assessment. Having clear and simple data ensures that you are monitoring your students’ progress. This doesn’t have to be an arduous process of assessment, but does need to be planned and purposeful so that you can use this data in a meaningful way. This lesson will provide you will a quick assessment tool and a spreadsheet to enable you to record your student results and track progress.
Highlights
- Having lessons explicitly modelled for you so that you can see what it can look like in your classroom.
- Downloading useful resources to use immediately in your program.
- Accessing a simple, effective assessment so that you can develop a data driven approach to teaching that places student need at the centre of your decision making.
Module 5
Phonics
Everyone knows that connecting letters and speech sounds together is crucial for strong reading, but not all approaches to teaching phonics get you great results for your whole class. In Module 6 you will learn the secrets to highly successful phonics teaching that equips your students with the knowledge and skills to read and spell words quickly and confidently. While phonics is only one part of your whole literacy program it is critical that you help children experience success nice and early in the school year. Teaching using systematic, synthetic phonics that has a clear progression in structured lessons will give you and your students the success you are looking for.
First up in this module you will learn about the importance of a set sequence of teaching phonics. You will learn about sequencing phonics and be set up to make decisions about the pace and intensity of teaching based on the needs of the students in your class.
Secondly, you will watch a phonics lesson in action and learn the steps to teaching a systematic, explicit lesson in just a few minutes each day. The final two lessons in this module will guide you through teaching children to blend and segment with graphemes (letters). You will learn two sequences – one for those children who can blend and another for children who are still learning this skill. This module comes with downloadable lesson plans and sequencing template you help you put together the ‘big picture’ of your teaching.
Highlights
- Sequencing your students’ phonics learning and deciding on the pace of learning.
- Watching phonics lessons in action
- Implementing your own systematic phonics lessons in your classroom
Module 6
Assessment and Grouping
Module 8 will equip you with all of the tools you need to assess students, group them for small group instruction and monitor progress. These tools are all easy to use and implement and present an alternative to benchmark reading assessment that is so prevalent in our schools. While the decisions to benchmark or not may be out of your hands, you can still conduct high quality assessment as part of your own classroom programming. This doesn’t mean hours and hours of assessment, but it does mean intentional opportunities to monitor student progress.
Lesson 1 introduces my informal phonics assessment. You will have the opportunity to download and review the assessment as well as watch me administer it to a student.
In Lesson 2 you will make important decisions about the timing of your class assessments and get really clear about what this will look like and how you can get the biggest bang for your buck from your assessment schedule.
Lesson 3 will show you how to group students beyond the reading levels you may be used to. By making grouping decisions based on skills rather than on these levels you can be sure that your teaching is targeted to the precise needs of your students.
Finally, we will revisit the year-long expectations for your students and plot their progress against this sequence. This will help you evaluate the effectiveness of your approach and make adjustments and alterations so that every child in your class can keep up and progress throughout the year.
Highlights
- Access to a simple to use phonics assessment and student a progress monitoring form.
- Making firm decisions about the schedule of assessment you will choose
- Grouping your students with confidence for small group instruction to cater to their precise needs
Module 7
Using Decodable Texts
Decodable texts are one of the key inclusions in an evidence-based reading program. This module will introduce you to a range of decodable texts and demonstrate how to match their use to your overall reading instruction. No more guessing strategies, no more ‘thinking about what makes sense’. The focus in this module is on building strong decodable skills for all children.
Firstly you will watch as I demonstrate how to use decodable texts during a small group instruction lesson. You will have access to a lesson planning template containing a sequence of teaching steps to include in any small group reading lesson.
Secondly, you will reflect on the differentiated needs of the students in your class and decide exactly how you will meet the needs of every student in your class. I want you to walk away from this lesson with a concrete plan of what teaching looks like for every group in your class.
Next, we will role play conversations and presentations for you to share information about your literacy program with your students’ families. You will draft a letter home to your students’ parents explaining what homework will comprise of in your classroom and set up a homework schedule for your students.
Lastly, you will learn how to achieve the balance between the use of decodable and authentic texts and gain clarity about which to use when within your overall literacy program.
Module 8
High Frequency Words
Once children can read words on their own it is time to teach them to read the irregular, high frequency words that they need in order to read decodable texts. This goes beyond the usual ‘sight word’ program and this module will show you how to teach these words to maximum effect.
Lesson 1 will help you understand exactly which words are taught as high frequency words and which aren’t. You will learn to avoid the traps that so many teachers fall into when it comes to teaching irregular words.
In lesson 2 and 3 I will lead you step by step through the effective teaching of high frequency words. No longer will you and your students spend time flashing through decks of cards only to have them forget the words as soon as they see them. You will have access to a lesson sequence and teaching resources that you can use both in whole class and small group lessons.
Lesson 4 will show you how to help students apply their newly learned High Frequency words in their writing and how to support this without children simply copying words from a word bank.
Module 9
Planning Your Next Steps
Now that you have a clear understanding of how to teach phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics, high frequency words and how to use decodable texts in your literacy teaching program, it is time to make plans for your next steps.
Having a clear road map to your next term and the rest of the year eliminates the guessing game. Your students’ future successes cannot be left to chance.
Firstly, let’s celebrate! This first part of module 12 is all about celebrating the growth that you have made in your teaching and your students have made in their learning.
Next, you will examine what your data is telling you. How many groups do you have? Where has your student growth been? Who is responding well to your approach and who needs some adjustment? A data driven approach is not a dry, soulless experience. Rather, it is an opportunity to put your students front and centre in your teaching.
The third lesson will guide you through the process of identifying your key areas for growth and improvement in your own teaching in the months to come. Becoming a high performing teacher of reading does not happen overnight, but is instead a process of continual improvement over time. I will share with you a simple, yet insightful process for identifying your strengths and areas of opportunity so that you can be clear about your next steps in your own improvement journey.
Finally, you will cement your goals to provide you with a clear path ahead. Goals help us to achieve greater focus and piece of mind in our work. The fact that the goals you will set come from your data will mean that your focus will be directly on the things that will make the biggest impact for your students. Having clear goals will also provide you with the language to reach out to others in your school to access the exact support and learning you need to move forward in your practice. This clarity saves you time and makes you more effective in your work.

Frequently Asked Questions
Burning Questions That Others Have Asked About Participating in A Teach Along:
I have small children. What if I can’t keep up with the program?
There is no keeping up and no falling behind. Teach Alongs are designed to allow you to access the materials in your time and your own pace.
There seems to be a lot of information. Are you sure I can manage it all?
Of course! If you are hungry to be a better teacher and are committed to getting results for every student, then you will be just fine. Remember, you have lifetime access to the Teach Along materials so you can take it one little bit at a time. You don’t need to implement everything all at once.
Do I need tech skills to participate?
If you can access your email you have the necessary skills to participate. The Simplero Site where the Teach Along ‘lives’ is as easy to use as clicking a button. If you have any technical difficulties, just get in touch. You aren’t on your own!
When I join up, will I get immediate access to all the modules?
No. A module is released each week of the Teach Along (except for the implementation weeks) to give you the opportunity to take things slowly and not be overloaded by too much information all at once.
I am an early career/mid-career/experienced teacher. Is this Teach Along for me?
Yes! Whether you are an early career or experienced teacher there are things to learn from this Teach Along. For newer teachers, I will provide you with easy to use lesson templates and resources so that you can focus on teaching your students instead of trying to figure everything else for yourself. For more experienced teachers, you will have the opportunity to revisit many aspects of teaching practice and refine your skills.
Still “Thinking About It?”
You should give Reading Success in the First Year a chance if you are motivated by any of the following:
- You have a feeling that there are better ways to help your children build strong reading foundations but are not entirely confident about what they are.
- You have a burning desire to reach EVERY child in your class. Not just some.
- You have been trying to learn more about the Science of Reading on your own but are overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information out there. You just want things to be Simple!
- Your students have been getting some ok results in previous years but you want those results to be better.
- You have a good grasp on the theory behind the science of reading and now need to see things in action to know how to bring it all to life.
I am super excited to be supporting you over the next 12 weeks.
Learning about the science of reading and how to implement has literally changed the lives of the children in my classrooms, particularly those who are at risk in some way. Changing and refining practice is about more than system data. It is about giving children the ultimate strong start to their lives.
We know that children who start behind, usually stay behind. Very few children will ‘catch up’ in the years following their Foundation year. We also know that if we can make sure that children have fundamental reading skills in the first year of school they are set up to achieve great things.
I can’t wait to show you how to make your teaching even stronger so that every child in your class can look at you with the spark of success in their eyes. After all, isn’t THAT why you became a teacher in the first place?
If you choose to accept my invitation to grow in your practice and commit to participating fully, I guarantee that the 12 weeks of the Reading Success in the First Year of School Teach Along will help you grow in confidence, skills and the ability to support every student in your class.
I look forward to meeting you inside this All-in Teach Along!
Take care,
Jocelyn
