Every teacher has at least one struggling reader in their class. These students have likely been stuck on the same reading level for the longest time, or there is progress but it is so slow that it’s painful. I’ve certainly had this experience in my classroom and I bet that you have too. In fact, this is the experience for more than a few teachers.
The reality is that children who start behind generally stay behind. For most children the level of reading they reach by year 3 is the level they stay at and this can have a devastating effect on their whole life. This stalling of reading developments isn’t because children can’t learn to read after this time, it’s because much of the time reading instruction stops after year 2. When this happens, kids are left behind, stuck thinking they are dumb and useless. And they’re not the only ones. Teachers and parents feel pretty useless too. In this 6 week Teach Along I am going to give you the tools to be able to help your students to feel good about themselves and get real results. I am going to give you the tools to help you reassure parents that all is not lost for their child. I am going to walk you through the process of learning about evidence based reading practice, assessing students, designing intervention and delivering it.
