Tuesday Tip - How to Answer Tough Questions in the Classroom

21 (1)

In today's Tuesday Tip, I discuss how to capture kids' tricky questions about words while giving you time to find answers without interrupting the lesson flow.

It's wonderful to engage children in talking about how words are constructed and what their histories are. But the scary thing as a teacher is when kids ask you questions you're not quite sure how to answer.

My suggestion for you is to have an iWonder board. This is a place in your classroom that you can record those really interesting questions.

So when someone says to you, Why are there two spellings of the word dependent? Instead of saying, "Oh, well, because English is silly", you can say, "What a great question. Let's pop it up here on the iWonderBoard and come back to it later".

This gives you time to think. It gives you time to just learn for yourself without feeling like you're on the spot.

It also means that you can get the answers for the children that they're looking for without disrupting the flow of your lesson.

So to make life easier on you and to give them what they're looking for, the iWonderBoard gets it done.
